The third part describes his imprisonment and the terrible tortures he endured, which eventually led to his death around November 15, 1944, at the age of 37. Despite the immense torments, Father Placido did not give away the names of his collaborators. Since his abduction, the friars of St. Anthony’s Basilica went out of their way to find out what had happened to their fellow friar. It was only after the end of the war that the horrific circumstances around his death began to emerge. They also learned that his body had been disposed of in the crematorium of the Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste, where his ashes joined those of countless other victims of the Holocaust. With the opening of Father Placido's Cause for Canonization, new details have emerged around his martyrdom and courageous silence, an act of love in favor of his collaborators. Father Placido is doubtless a Martyr of Silence and Charity.
