Happy New Year from the friars of the Basilica of Sant Anthony

Where can we start if we wish to build a better world?

It is important to start the New Year by speaking to our heart to invite it to take care of those closest to us.

Let's turn our attention to those around us... Maybe we'll omit publishing a post... a like or a whatsapp message, but we'll have an extra sister or brother next to us to love.

May this coming Christmas help us recover peace and inner harmony, which arise from the wonder and astonishment of discovering ourselves embraced by a warm hug from our Lord. He never tires of pointing out to us the path of dialogue, of self-giving and of love.

This simple Christmas story helps us all to understand that it is only when we free ourselves of all material and superficial things (that are trying to rob Christmas of its real meaning), that we can effectively welcome the love of Jesus into our hearts. A love that we should receive, keep and then share with all those around us.

The Basilica of Saint Anthony’s church bells rang joyously on September 8 this year when the friars got word that their Shrine had a new Rector in the person of Father Antonio Ramina. The news had been broken by the Minister General of the Conventual Franciscan friars, Fr. Carlos Trovarelli and by the Pontifical Delegate, Monsignor Fabio Dal Cin. It was the Holy Father himself who had indicated the name of Fr. Ramina from a choice of two other candidates that had been put to him by the Minister General.

The year is one that will undoubtedly be remembered for the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, in spite of both personal and financial difficulties faced by many, 2020 was another generous year. The result?

Ninety-six projects assisted, covering 31 countries through an expenditure of €2,645,944 providing concrete support to the poor of the world in spite of delays and problems caused by the pandemic.

The projects were realized thanks to the concrete support of the devotees of Saint Anthony and the subscribers of "Messenger of Saint Anthony".
